The Official Residence for the President

The presidential residence during provisional capital period(Busan Gyeongmudae) was a place where the president, Syngman Rhee, and his secretary received important national guest while living in that house. The memorial hall of provisional capital period has focused on reproducing the interior structure and atmosphere of that time when this was used as a presidential residence.

The building referred to as Busan Gyeongmudae during the Korean War was focused on reproducing the interior structure and atmosphere of that time through restoration construction from 2000-2001 and decoration in 2002. Various photos and remains related to presidential performance are exhibited there.

On the 1st floor, there are toilets and bathrooms and 8 rooms, such as, living room, study room, inner room, sitting room, kitchen, dining room, room of testimony, and room of remembrance; on the 2nd floor, there is an exhibition room and room of retrospection. The retrospection room shows the film related to the provisional capital “Busan” and the exhibition room displays the artifacts of the Korean War and the articles left by the president, Syngman Rhee.

1st floor

Living Room

Living Room

This is the place where all final decisions in politics and foreign affairs were made during Korean War. In this place the president appointed government officials such as, vice president, secretary, general etc. and he received the report in regard to the state affairs and also gave orders to them and met with Ambassador Mucho and General Ridgeway.

 

Study room

Study room

It is a small room next to the living room where they stored various books and reference data. During the war president, Syngman Rhee spent most of his time taking a rest and eating.

 

Inner Room

Inner Room

This is the room where the president, Syngman Rhee stayed and slept. In this room the traditional Korean clothes of President Lee and His wife Francesca are displayed and there are furniture for living such as jagyejang, bandaji, chest etc. to decorate the inner room.

 

Sitting Room

The living room was the place where the president’s family and the people worked in Gyeongmudae gathered together. We have displayed the miniature showing the politics, life, education and market of refugee during provisional capital period.

 

Dining Room and Kitchen

Dining Room and Kitchen

The dining room was the place where the president, his family and his staff had dined. In the kitchen they cooked rice and made side dishes. In this place the dining table, cupboard, various silverware and props are displayed.

 

Room of Testimony

Room of Testimony

This was the room originally used as a security office. In order to let people know about the disaster of Korean War, we have made it into a room where we can hear the testimony from a grandmother “Lee Jeongsook” who participated in the Korean War as a member of special forces.

 

Room of Thinking

This is the place where a cook originally lived. We made it into a room to re-think about the times by exhibiting a book related to the Korean War and president, Syngman Rhee.

 

2nd floor

Room of Remembrance

Room of Remembrance

This was the room used by guests who visited the president’s house, and is now a room of retrospection to show the films related to the provisional capital during the Korean War, such as (Provisional Capital Busan, the History of 1,000 Days) and (Still, Life is Beautiful).

 

Office

Room of Remembrance

This was originally the place of the president, Syngman Rhee. In here he took care of government affairs and the first lady Francesca took care of the housework.
